The 6 Types of Commercial Carpeting Every Interior Designer Should Know About

There’s more to commercial carpeting than just picking a color and a design that fits in with the rest of the building. Sure, those are important, but if the result isn’t price efficient, durable, and aesthetically pleasing, it won’t satisfy the client.

Commercial interior designers must consider maintenance cost and the amount of foot traffic when deciding on carpeting for a business. Commercial carpeting is generally similar to residential carpeting, except the former is expected to withstand more wear and tear than the latter.

As a result, the materials used in the carpet matter greatly. Synthetic, for instance, is better at resisting dirt and stains whereas wood can promote a luxurious look for the company. Also, there are several types of commercial carpeting, each differing in their method of construction and ideal use case.

Broadloom | Commercial carpeting

If you have a large area in need of carpeting, broadloom might be for you. Because broadloom is nailed to the ground, it is far less likely to shift during use than other types of carpeting. However, installation tends to generate more waste since a large piece of carpet must be cut to fit the room.

While broadloom is fairly resistant against dirt, cleaning it can be a challenge without professional help. You probably won’t see broadloom used very often in commercial carpeting as a result.

Carpet Tiles | Commercial Carpeting

As its name suggests, carpet tiles are made by stitching together tiles of carpet onto a floor, resulting in a checkerboard appearance. Unlike broadloom carpets, tiles are made of several smaller pieces of carpet rather than fewer larger pieces and thus are cheaper to replace if only one tile is damaged.

Plus, carpet tiles are constructed in layers with cushioning underneath, which helps absorb sound and contribute to the noise isolation of the flooring. And with varying patterns of tiles, many beautiful designs and patterns are possible with carpet tiles.

Loop Pile | Commercial Carpeting

Popular in both commercial and residential projects, loop piles are exactly what they sound like: loops of fabric knit together. The closer the loops are to each other, the more durable the surface.

These types of carpeting vary in thickness but almost always have a smooth top surface, making them ideal for office chairs. They’re also the easiest to clean too.

Cut Pile | Commercial Carpeting

Cut pile carpets work well in areas of high foot traffic. Their customizable thickness and wide variety of designs make them a popular choice in commercial carpeting. They feel soft under the feet as well.

Cut and Loop | Commercial Carpeting

Another type of carpeting ideal for high traffic areas is the cut and loop. Cut and loop is good at hiding dirt since it’s knit together in layers. It’s not hard to see why this type is commonly chosen for carpets customers and clients see often.

Welcome Mats | Commercial Carpeting

Much like the welcome mat to your house, a business welcome mat is a small carpet that sits in front of the doorway leading from the outside of the building inward. An abrasive and absorbent surface is used to remove dirt and moisture from visitors’ shoes before they start stepping on the carpets.
